A detached stone cottage in the heart of the beautiful Mid Wales countryside offers a peaceful retreat for a family or small group of friends. Set on a working hill farm and approached by narrow lanes, the homely property sleeps four guests. Full of character, its original features include an impressive stone fireplace and low-set windows on the first floor. There are lovely scenic walks from the door and the cottage owners welcome guests to explore their farm. The pretty Victorian spa town of Builth Wells (8 miles) is within easy reach.

Enter through a small hallway and into the compact kitchen/diner. A step leads up to the spacious lounge, with wooden ceiling beams, comfortable sofas and a wood burner housed in a magnificent stone fireplace. Upstairs are an appealing double bedroom and a cosy twin; this room has country-style sloping ceilings, with slightly limited headroom. The bathroom also has restricted headroom over the wonderful bath. Outside, a lovely, enclosed garden at the rear is reached from the approach lane. Set on two levels, it has patio furniture, grass, and beautiful, far-reaching views. To the front is a path and garden border with a gate.

If dining out appeals after a day spent hiking the hills, the village pub in Erwood (2 miles) serves food. Builth Wells also has a good range of eateries, along with shops and a country market selling local produce, including preserves and fresh vegetables. The former cattle market houses a lively arts centre, with a theatre and cinema and you can stroll along the banks of the River Wye, which runs past the town. Visit the glorious Brecon Beacons National Park (11 miles) to enjoy a guided walk in the mountains or opt for a gentle boat trip along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.

Lovely little cottage. Very impressed with how clean it was and how well resourced the kitchen was in such a small space! The owners were incredibly friendly and gave us a true picture of farming life in wales, the children loved watching out of the window.

The wood burner was difficult to light due to the wood provided, and lack of good kindling, but was easily rectified and did not detract from an enjoyable time. Loved the flora and fauna, particularly the birds, including the local tawny owl who was so close at night. Local beauty spots are easy to access, (I recommend a trip to the Elan Valley),Read more and the local towns are always worth a visit. Hide
